Commentary about an academic journal
This commentary critiques Chung-Kit YUs’ article “COOPERATIVE RESEARCH ON PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES AND QUALITY OF LIFE IN DENSELY POPULATED AREA- A PROGRESS REPORT”.
This article is showing a conduct of a scientific study which examines the effects of physical activities on stress reduction, health, productivity, and quality of life of a population in an urban environment. Chung-Kit Yu claimed that Hong Kong is an urban city where it is confronting many urban changes including crowded living conditions, energy depletion, heavy transportation and toxic environments. Thus, adaptation to urban life is necessary for the attainment of a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being.
I agree his claim in which adaptation to urban life is of vitally importance to the complete state of physical, mental and social well-being. In respect of Hong Kong’s background, it is undoubtable that Hong Kong is high-densely city where both roads and streets are always full of vehicles and pedestrians, which is more likely to result in environmental problems- air pollution, and also the emotional disturbance- being easy to be annoyed by the unnecessary environmental noise. Meanwhile, urban living includes a heavy workload due to the rapid economic growth in such highly-international city. People tends to be physically inactive under the situation of highly-demand service occupation and are under a high work pressure. Therefore, the above problems would severely deteriorate Hongkongers’ both physical and psychological health. Adding the effect of stressful life, individual’s social-being tends to be weaker where conflicts always occur between families, friends as a result of emotionally instability.
Based on the above problems induced by urbanization, Chung-Kit Yu’s claim is worthy to place much emphasis. Adaptation to urban life include lots of aspects. For example, in physical aspect as Chung’s studies showed, having a regular exercise in which it helps burn calories ,thus, enhancing reduce body fat which help reduce the risk of chronic diseases and cardiovascular diseases. Meanwhile, nowadays, many researches have pointed out that exercising is conducive to balance a person’s mental state due to the effect of a hormone-Endorphines. In addition, in mental aspect, actively sharing our own emotions, stress to those who are trustworthy is able to help release our stress and reduce emotional problems, in which social-being will be improved since less conflicts, caused by emotional problems, appear.
For me, I am also a citizen living in urban area, in which I encounter those urban changes every day. As being a teacher in future, I will place much emphasis on students’ physical, mental and social-being rather than just concentrating on their academic result. For example, before starting lessons, several stretching exercises will be introduced in order to warm up their body and “mind”, also it is effective to raise their awareness towards the importance of regular exercise. In regard to releasing stress, I prefer to give the students’ a small card where some encouraging sentences are written, colorful and funny pictures are showed which help interest them.
