How much do you weigh, Mr. Foster?
Inter-interview
誰是Peggy Lam?
Initial idea of being CBA
(English)
Community based artist?
When we think about what CBA is, we should define what artist is.
For me, artist can be everyone.
Not only those people who create artworks,
but also people who know to appreciate beauty
Art can be created, can be appreciated, can be criticized…
But what’s the differences between CBA and artist?
Artist always self-oriented
They like to express their own feeling and thinking,
no matter on painting, wordings, acting…
However, CBA should concern more about society.
They always alert what’s happening in society
They help citizen to voice out through their works
They draw different groups of people attention to care about benefits of others
They link up different society
They can be many roles for the culture
Such as administrator, designer, exhibitor…
They build up and contribute to the culture through their projects
May be their projects are commercialized,
They mainly social-oriented.
They also record history of the community
Someone may say that community based artist should be professionally trained
But who can define what professional is?
Everyone have their own professional talent
People who use their professional skill to contribute to their social group
And that’s CBA!!!
CBA??
1. Norman Rockwell
3. Anna Sui
Theatre Reflective Essay
At the beginning of this course, I asked many questions according to the topic “Theatre and Stage Art”. What is it talking about? Stage design? Acting? In this course, each part of drama were introduced and we were asked to do some experience works to explore more. When I prepared the final performance, I can experience a whole process from script writing to perform on the stage.
The story of my group is “After hundreds years”, which original name was “Story of little Gordon”. At the beginning, Gordon just wanted to find his true love and rejected Anita to be his accompanist. When he met Tony and woke his memory up, but they met in wrong time and place. Finally Gordon found that true love is around him and did not need to chase for it.
In this drama performance, I was mainly responsible for lighting design. In the past experience in secondary school, I was responsible for stage set and props design. However, I didn’t have any experience on designing and controlling lighting system, or even went into control room before. I felt very confuse and lost. I didn’t have any concepts about how to use lighting for executing the drama. I started to find some references about this field. The main purpose for lighting is identifying the key areas of the stage where most of the actions take place. It can draw the attention of audiences and make sure that they can see the faces of actors properly. As we did not use many props for the set, lighting became important to execute the environment for the scenes.
In the process, I learnt to read the basic lighting plan and determined which lamp needed to be used for dramatic effect. For example, we used full light to create sunlight effect on the stage. Also I learnt how to use the lighting control panel of C-LP-11 for lighting cue. Although I did not have experience before, our group spent lots of time to go through the technical items and solve technical problems together. It became one of my professional and valuable experience for my career development.
Apart from lighting design, I designed the leaflet for the team. As my workload for lighting design was not very heavy, I used my graphic design skill to contribute for the team. Leaflet can help audience to know more about our story and it’s an important evidence for our drama. It can also remind the memory of audience that experienced during our performance.
Review of 觀
Nine year tribute completed
A nine-year tribute, Miroirs de Vie, Hymne aux Fleurs qui Passent and Song of Pensive Beholding, expressed the interconnectedness of the men, the spirits and the gods permeates of Lin Lee-chen's belief. To show the beauty of nature, Lin not just put many effort on the chronology, but also on the costume design. Costume of Miao Ethnic Group and Dong Ethnic Group were the main theme and they were mainly used for the most important festival occasions, thus it could absolutely fit the Lin's desire. Apart from the costume, Lin also talented in decoration and she chose Empress Dowager Cixi's Nail Sheath as eagle's talons. With the detailed finger movement, dancers; hands looked like the feathered crest of eagle and white bird. The whole image of dancers really impressed and could be appreciated as art pieces on the stage.
At the beginning of the performance, dancers moved slowly and tension was formed. Audience kept calm and looked forward what dancers would be done for the next second. Although the whole performance contained eight scenes and no intermission was included, the transitions between scenes were smooth and my breathing was led by dancers' movement. When I paid attention during the performance, I felt the passion and concentration of dancers and that's their respect to the tribute to the soul of nature and their successful key.
The theme of this performance was inspired by the human destruction to the nature. Lin chose a mythic story about the sour of nature and used her unique dancing language to portray the connection between man and the spirit of nature. Audience could feel the uniqueness of Lin's style as that's totally different from other dancing performances in Hong Kong. She did not use any dialogues, just body movements to show the relationship and the story, and costume to represent the identities of roles. Room were left to audience for own interpretation.
Gateway to music- final performance
Gateway to music
Individual Reflective Journal
Our group performance are divided into 4 parts which including Baroque period, Classical period, Romantic period and Chinese style. We used the same melody with different styles. Our performance aims to present what do we believe in music. We believe music can connect people together, no matter in the past, now or future.
We use vocal to sing the melody in harmony in the first part. It’s difficult for us because of the pitch. As our voice range are very different and lacks of vocal knowledge, we could not sing in the same pitch. In the coaching, we learnt to use our fingers to point to the same point and we can get the same pitch easily. This is a very useful and easy method for us to tackle problem of pitch.
In the second part, body percussion is used. However, I am worse in sense of beat and it’s hard for me to catch the beat. Our classmate, Tsz Lam, is very helpful and she practiced with me for many times. Before the final performance, she sticked a sweet on one of my shoes and asked me to watch it when I was counting the beat. Finally, I succeed on it.
Drawing is used as other art form of performance in the third part. As we spent too much time on practicing the first and second part, we didn’t have time on planning how to draw the picture during the performance. Also we didn’t have many materials to choose for drawing. To make sure that we can finish the picture with limited time, I proposed that we can prepare poster colors on paper first and use water to spread colors for drawing different lines, pattern and shapes.
Lyrics in the fourth part are written by our group mates. It is about how music can communicate and get people together. We sing in Putonghua since it is easier for us to fit the lyric with melody.
Although our final performance is not too professional, I think that we succeed in it. During the rehearsal, I really enjoyed singing with my team since I felt the power of music. We experienced problem-solving in different parts and that’s the most valuable gift I got from this performance.
